Day 1238: Slowing Down

Disney trips can seem overly tiring. And they probably are. In comparison to traveling other places, where you might spend time sleeping in or slowly strolling around a city, a Disney trip forces you to keep moving most of the time, especially if it's your first time or you don't visit often. For years, it's been about seeing all the main sights within a short amount of time. After all, if you only have a few days once a year to hit your favorite attractions, sometimes more than once, you probably don't want to waste your time. So, as my best friends became quickly aware of, there is no rest at Disney World.

This past trip, however, I found myself slowing down a bit. I didn't feel the need to see all the major attractions, although there were definitely a few that are always Must Dos for me (Spaceship Earth, Haunted Mansion, Buzz Lightyear, Toy Story Midway Mania, and so on and so forth). I didn't really want to run back and forth the whole trip (although I definitely did some running regardless).

Instead, I found myself seeking out some of the calmer attractions, many of which are perfect for the hot summer days that Florida is so well known for. My personal favorite, of course, is the PeopleMover, which I probably ride almost as often as Spaceship Earth. It's a calming attraction, and while the lines have steadily been growing longer over the past couple of years, the breeze is nice and you do get to sit down for the entire attraction. Perfect for hot days when everything else at Magic Kingdom has a 45 minute wait.

At Epcot, I spent a lot of time walking around World Showcase, which usually ends with a lot of standing, but if you really take your time and do it right, you can try a lot of food, see a lot of sights, relish in a lot of air conditioning, and even sit down. The films in Canada and China aren't particularly popular, and while you do have to stand there, there are rather comfortable seats in the French film as well as in The American Adventure. Speaking of which, The American Adventure pavilion is perfect for hot days, since you can cool off in the waiting area to listen to the Voices of Liberty before even going into the half hour show. And then there's music groups that perform on the stage outside too, so really you could spend an hour or more there alone.

Hollywood Studios and Animal Kingdom are harder with all the construction, but I'm positive that as the new additions to each park open that will change. Meanwhile, Disney Springs is now a spectacular spot to spend an entire evening or, as it continues to develop, an entire day. It's free to visit, which makes it even better, and there's so much to explore without constantly running here, there, and everywhere.

I guess I've realized over the past couple of trips that there's much more to Walt Disney World than meets the eye, and relaxing throughout the entire resort can be just as much fun as hitting all the E-Ticket attractions. I mean, just because Ellen's Energy Adventure is outdated and sort of long doesn't mean it's not a great place to hang out when the air gets too hot and you want a break! Sometimes a 45 minute attraction in air conditioning where you get to sit the whole time is exactly what you want!

Have a magical day!

Day 1234: First Look

Unfortunately I didn't get to spend as much time at Disney Springs this trip as I would have liked, especially with how many of the new locations opened only days before I got there, but what I did see definitely impressed me, and I'm excited to see more when I'm there in July and really go through and take in each individual store. Based on my first impressions though, I'm really going to enjoy the new Disney Springs.

While still not completely finished, Disney Springs just opened a whole boatload of new stores, restaurants, and entertainment, a trend that will continue until everything is finished soon. The expansion added new landscaping in addition, which really brings everything together and gives the entirety of the area a different vibe from the rundown, lacking feeling it used to have. Really I think this is one of the most exciting expansions we've seen in a while, and it's not even in a park!

In particular, the covered area is really impressive and will probably be super helpful on rainy days in Florida, which is pretty much everyday, so I can see the appeal. In the back area, the streets feel quaint and almost street-like, with terraces and windows on the upper floors of each building. Some of the larger attractions, such as Morimoto Asia and Sprinkles Cupcakes feature their own large buildings, which almost feel monstrous compared to what's been there in the past. And yet, it all somehow fits together easily, and while I'm sure it'll take a while to learn the ropes of how to get from one place to another and know where each store is, I'm more than excited to explore!

Have a magical day!

Day 74: The Magic, The Memories & You

Originally I was going to talk about the unveiled plans for Disney Springs, but it seems everyone else has that covered. While I am pretty excited to see what this expansion to Downtown Disney (well, overhaul really) will bring, there are plenty of other things at Disney to talk about.

But it is the announcement for Disney Springs that brought me to this blog post. I was watching the announcement video with my friend and we were discussing the projections they use on the model to give it life and color. I very much enjoyed the projection, and I was explaining how it's probably similar or the same to what they use on the castle each night.

And that led to The Magic, The Memories & You. I loved this show...like a lot. I admit, I cried the first time I saw it, and then several times more. It's a very magical show...but I have to also admit that I'm disappointed with the replacement. It just doesn't flow the same way as the Magic, The Memories & You did. It's just not there. Granted, some of my favorite parts are still a portion of the show, but there's still something missing.

Then again, I have some great memories from that original show. A couple of years ago I headed down to Disney with my FBLA Chapter, and my adviser brought her son along too. He had never been to Disney World, but he was a great sport all the time. I don't think I heard him complain once the entire time we were at Magic Kingdom, which was pretty much all day...a really long time for a 6 year old. But my favorite part of that trip was when we saw this show. It was late, of course, and it was kind of hard for him to see since we were in a large bunch of people, but I had previously seen the show and knew exactly which portion he would love. He loves two things (or did at the time, I'm not sure if this is still true), Buzz Lightyear and Tinker Bell, so it was obvious to me that he would love seeing the castle become a rocket. I told him to listen for Buzz's famous words, "To Infinity and Beyond," and when he finally heard it he was like "Lizzie! I heard it! I heard him!" And then we watched the rocket head up into the sky and all he could say was "Wow." It's one of my favorite moments of any Disney trip I've ever been on, and it's certainly something I'm never going to forget.

My favorite parts of the show are, of course, the rocket, because who doesn't like that? But also the "Circle of Life" portion, where the castle rotates from day to night over and over until it turns into the old camera. The final portion is the Lilo and Stitch part, because I cry pretty much every time when Stitch goes "Ohana Means Family" because it's just adorable and cute and completely true and magical.

Either way, this conversation led to us watching the show...which always brings a little extra magic to my day. So I figured I would share a video of it with you so you can watch too.

Here's today's Disney History: 2002: Singer-songwriter Phil Collins (known for his music in Tarzan) is among the 10 inducted as Disney Legends. In honor of the opening of the Walt Disney Studios Park at Disneyland Paris, all of this year's inductees are of European origin.

Have a magical day!
